El acceso a información científica relevante, en el momento preciso, es vital para la toma de decisiones del profesional de la salud. Esto para el beneficio del paciente
En la sociedad de hoy cobra más sentido que nunca el rol de la biblioteca que organiza para su acceso la información que será utilizada para la toma de decisiones y/o a su vez para generarámás conocimiento y más información. +De donde surge el concepto del IAIMS?
1980 - NLM (National Library of Medecine) junto con la AAMC (Association American Medical Colleges) deciden que hay que llevar a cabo un estudio sobre el impacto de las nuevas tecnologías de comunicación e información en el cuidado al paciente, la investigación y la educación.
1982 - Matheson Report - Descubrió que por lo general los centros académicos de salud, no se encuentran en posición de responder a las nuevas demandas de una sociedad basada en la transmisión electrónica de la información.
1983 - La NLM inicia como respuesta al Matheson Report, el programa de desarrollo del prototipo del IAIMS.
